The records are not yet on the shelves, not yet touched by the mild boredom of order. I cannot march up and down their ranks to pass them in review before a friendly audience. You need not fear any of that. Instead, I must ask you to join me in the disorder of vinyl crates that have been wrenched open, the air saturated with the dust of wood, the floor covered with torn open cardboard mailers, to join me among piles of LP's and 7" singles that are seeing daylight again after what might be many years of darkness, so that you may be ready to share with me a bit of the mood - it is certainly not an elegiac mood but, rather, one of anticipation - which these records arouse in a genuine Groove Collector. I was in Indy in 1980 and heard a free concert including Hugo Smooth as the closing act. I was very impressed and picked up a tape before I left. I enjoyed it for about 5 years when it was stolen from my car with my other tapes. I would love to get another copy if anyone knows where I can purchase one. donaldhanes@aim.com
Hugo Smooth is probably one of the best bands to have performed in Indy during the 80's. I had the pleasure of working with them for awhile. Wish they were still around!!!
Used to groove to Hugo Smooth at the Hummingbird and also at the Vogue many, many times during the 80s, one of my all time favorite bands from that era. Also really loved the band Light, the tightest cover band I've ever heard in my life.

Saw them many times in Bloomington, including opening for Spyro Gyra (twice I think). Good music.
Wow...I forgot how much I liked them. And how great someone has tipped the hat to Light...they were the best cover band I ever heard! I am fortunate to have transcribed the HS vinyl to CD and continue to enjoy it.

In my opinion, the stand out tracks are "Mysteries Eyes" and "Won't Play Bumpum Cars". I didn't discover them until about 1994 when my then-wife turned me onto them. She was a grad student at IU in the mid-80s and saw them play with Flora Purim. As for what happened to Wayne Hall, I saw his obituary online a few years ago. He died in the early '00s, I think, and I'm pretty sure he was still married to Joan. I found it quite sad, because even tho I never saw them in person, I've been enjoying their album for nearly 20 years, and especially because his soprano sax solo in Mysteries Eyes is so excellent.
